PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely determine the position of a coil for generating a magnetic field built in an endoscope with a simple structure, and precisely detect the position and direction of the endoscope. SOLUTION: A minute magnetic field detection signal detected by a sense coil 22j is amplified by a sense coil output amplifier 27, and then inputted to a mutual inductance detection part 26, and the resulting signal is inputted to a source coil position detection part 31 constituting a form calculation part 30 to provide the position information for each source coil. In the detection of the position of the source coil in the source coil position detection part 31, the electromotive force generated in the sense coil 22j is estimated by determining the position and direction of the source coil, and the position and direction on the estimated value side are determined so that the difference between the estimated value and the measured value of the electromotive force obtained form a plurality of sense coils 22j is minimized.
