PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate assembly adjustment by covering an opening part on which a part of an intermediate shaft faces, with a removable cover. SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine 1 transmitting the rotation of a crankhaft 5 to camshafts 17, 18 through a first intermediate shaft 20 and a second intermediate shaft 26, a cylinder block 2 and a cylinder head 9 are respectively provided with opening parts on which the first intermediate shaft 20 and second intermediate shaft 26 face at least partially, and the opening parts are respectively covered with covers 47, 52. Since the opening parts are respectively opened to the cylinder block 2 and cylinder head 9 in the removed state of the covers 47, 52, a gear 23 or the like is sub-assembled to the first intermediate shaft 20, for instance, and in the state of a chain 29 being stretched over the first and second intermediate shafts 20, 26, the first intermediate shaft 20 can be batch-assembled as it is to the cylinder block 2 so as to heighten the assemblage of the engine 1.
