A tethered, child resistant, tamper evident closure for containers is provided which is particularly suited for containers of over-the-counter pharmaceuticals such as aspirin and the like. The closure includes a cap, a press-on retaining ring, a hinge, and a tear strip. The cap has a snap which engages a protrusion of the container and allows rotation of the cap relative to the container but prevents removal of the cap from the container except at a cap release position. At the cap release position, the snap is in angular registration with a recess in the protrusion. The retaining ring has a grip which engages a protrusion of the container and allows rotation of the retaining ring relative to the container but prevents removal of the retaining ring from the container. The hinge pivotally connects the cap to the retaining ring so that the cap is tethered to the container when the cap is removed from the container. The rear strip connects the cap to the retaining ring to provide tamper evidence and holds the cap coaxial with the retaining ring during automated assembly of the closure to the container. The cap and the retaining ring also have interengaging teeth which rotate the retaining ring in unison with the cap to the cap release position.
