PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the high rate charge/discharge capability and the utilization factor of an active material by previously treating the surface of nickel hydroxide, covering the surface with a stable metal in an alkaline aqueous solution, and giving conductivity and activity to the nickel hydroxide. SOLUTION: Deposited metal is attached to the surface of powdery nickel hydroxide 3 with adequate gaps produced. Conductive powder 2 such as nickel powder for giving conductivity when the nickel hydroxide is used as an active material fills gaps between nickel hydroxide particles covered with deposited metal to give conductivity. The deposited metal attached to the surface effectively supplies electricity to the surface of the nickel hydroxide 3. By selecting the kind of metal, electrochemical characteristics can be given to the surface of the nickel hydroxide. When the surface of the nickel hydroxide is activated, then the nickel hydroxide is immersed in an electroless plating solution containing a metal salt having catalytic action, the surface of the nickel hydroxide particle is covered with deposited metal having catalytic action. |
