The door or window has two or more panels, e.g. one fixed (4) and one sliding (5). Both panels have the same dimensions, equivalent in width to half that of the frame. The sliding panel moves relative to the frame on two carriages (9), situated at each of its two lower corners. Each carriage has pairs of vertical and horizontal rollers which interact with guide rails (13,14) inside the frame lying parallel to the plane of the panel. The carriage also acts as a support for a pivoted lever (20) which rotates about a vertical axis (21) and operates a cam mechanism which places the moving panel in line with the fixed one when the door/window is closed and shifts the sliding panel to one side for opening.
