PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately measure the distance to even a subject which has a lightness distribution and adjust the focus without any intricate procedure for the focus adjustment while having a systematizing performance enabling combination with an endoscope with any diopter is obtained. SOLUTION: A CPU 37 detects the lightness at an observation position 3 in an area of interest according to lightness information generated by a lightness detecting circuit 36 from part of the output signal of a gain circuit 34 and sight line information outputted from a sight line photographic device 41. On the basis of the detection signal, a signal controlling the gain of a gain circuit 34 in order to make video output into a proper value is sent out and a dimming control signal is sent out to a light source diaphragm controller 45 to control a light source diaphragm 22. At the same time, the focus adjustment is performed by moving an image forming lens 15 by controlling the lens driving device 30 of a TV camera head 5 on the basis of the detection signal so as to set a focus position to a proper value.
