PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely remove an optical fiber deteriorated in strength so as to assure the reliability of strength guarantee by performing guaranteeing weighing for impressing weights upon the optical fiber while the fiber is run by means of a screening device at a plurality of locations. SOLUTION: A coated optical fiber 1 drawn out from a supply reel 12 enters a first-stage screening section 18 through a supplying-side fixed pulley 14 and a supplying-side dancer roller 16. Then the fiber 1 is wound around a take-up 30 through a pinch roller 20, a second-stage screening section 22, a pinch roller 24, winding-side dancer roller 26, and winding-side fixed pulley 28. The screening section 18 is provided with a plurality of mandrels for bending and twisting the fiber 1 and the screening section 22 is provided with a screening dancer roller 34 which gives a strain load to the fiber 1. Each constant of the dancer roller 34 is set so that the fracture of the fiber 1 cannot occur in the screening section 22 due to the fatigue of the glass. Therefore, when the lot of an optical fiber fractured in the section 22 is removed, coated optical fibers can be sorted with high reliability. |
