PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having satisfactory error characteristics by forming the constituent layers of a recording medium on a surface-worked substrate with sectorial streaks. SOLUTION: A Ti layer 32 as an underlayer, an Al-Si alloy layer 33, a carbon layer 34, a Cr layer 35, a magnetic layer 36 of a CoCrPtB alloy, a protective layer 37 and a lubricative layer 38 are laminated on a surface-worked substrate 31 with sectorial streaks. The sectorial streaks of the substrate 31 are formed by grinding the substrate 31 by ductile mode working at 0.05-20μm of cutting depth set at a grindstone. By this easy method, the objective magnetic recording medium having satisfactory error characteristics is efficiently produced.
