PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to form a uniform orientation state by respectively specifying the value of the surface energy dispersion term of oriented film surfaces prior to rubbing treatments and the double refraction quantity generated by the rubbing treatments, thereby increasing the pretilt angle of a ferroelectric liquid crystal element and intensifying uniaxial orientation property. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element is constituted by enclosing liquid crystals 15 exhibiting a chiral smectic phase between two substrates 11a and 11b formed with transparent electrodes 12a, 12b and oriented films 14a, 14b. The dispersion termγd of the surface energy of the film surface prior to the rubbing treatments of these oriented films 14a, 14b is <=33dyne/cm and the double refraction quantity (retardation) R generated by the rubbing treatments is >=0.4nm. The uniform orientation is hardly obtainable on the entire surface if the dispersion termγd of the surface energy exceeds 33dyne/cm. The uniaxial orientation property weakens and the uniform orientation state is hardly obtainable if the double refraction quantity (retardation) R generated by the rubbing treatments is below 0.4nm.
