The object includes a number of luminous elements e.g. diodes, halogen lamps etc. The luminous devices are positioned on a support which extends across the inside of the ball and has an outer contact switch which abuts the inner surface of the ball. The ball outer surface is formed from two hemispheres, with a flexible centre gap (5). When the ball hits the ground, the gap closes and activates the switch. The hemispheres can be transparent, semi-transparent or opaque with transparent holes. The ball can be an ovoid or polyhedral as well as a sphere.
