MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM AND ITS PRODUCTION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure superior CSS resistance and a very low glide height characteristic by continuously varying the surface shape from a CSS region to a data region and regulating the center line average roughness of the CSS region to a specified range. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a substrate and a contact- start-stop(CSS) region and a data region formed on the substrate and has continuously varied surface roughness from the CSS region to the data region. The center line average roughness (Ra) of the CSS region is 10-40Å. The continuous variation is attained by sputter texturing.
