A precolumn separator (12) provides a method of separating a solvent from a sample for use in gas chromatograph (14). Precolumn (12) has an independent carrier gas control mechanism which allows passage of the carrier gas therethrough at a rate favorable for stripping the solvent from the sample and can be a packed column (38) which includes separate heating elements (60, 106). The solvent-laden carrier gas is then purged through purge vent (104) which is separate from gas chromatograph (14). After a period of time which effectively permits the carrier gas to be significantly removed from the sample, the flow rate of the carrier gas is reduced to the normal operating gas flow rate and purge vent (104) is closed. The sample is then passed through column (12) to gas chromatographic column (14). A second purge vent can then be directed to the purge vent inlet in gas chromatograph (14).
|
