Remote control system for consumer electronics device

The system includes a remote control unit (7) and a consumer electronics device that comprises an OFF-key for switching the device permanently off. The remote control unit comprises a standby-key (9) for switching the device from a normal operating mode into a standby-mode. The remote control unit comprises also a second OFF-key (10) for switching the device permanently off. The standby-key of the remote control preferably also serves as the second OFF-key, by keeping the key pressed for a longer time period, or by repeatedly pressing it. The device preferably contains a clock circuit (14) which determines and stores, over a long period, which times of day the device is in the normal operating mode, and switches the device during these times from an OFF state into the standby mode.
