A clearing unit, esp. a base sludge clearing member in a round basin sludge clearing unit, comprises a clearing plate which dips into the water surface, and a receiving member on the main clearing unit. The sludge clearer is placed in a dam position once a given angle has been reached. The clearer has a holding slat (10), and a floating member (12) is connected to the latter and carries the clearing plate (18).
