LIGHT EMITTING DISPLAY ELEMENT AND A FLAT DISPLAY

A light emitting display element comprising an antiferroelectric layer (2), top- and back-face electrodes (3 and 4) for impressing an alternating electric field upon the layer (2), and a phosphor layer (6) which emits light on receiving cold electrons emitted from the layer (2) when the alternating electric fields are impressed upon the layer (2). The top- and back-face electrodes (3 and 4) are respectively provided on the top and back surfaces of the layer (2) and at least either of the electrodes (3 and 4) can be comb-shaped or perforated. A flat display (20) is constituted by arranging such light emitting display elements (1) on a plane. The flat display (20) has a large display area in spite of its light weight and small size and exhibits excellent display characteristics stably for a long term.
