<p>A combined tissue clamping and suturing instrument (10) includes a pair of jaws (18, 20) actuated by the handle portion (24, 26), a hollow needle (80) mounted on the first jaw (18) having a sharp point (100) and a slot (106), and a suture (104) extending through the needle. A groove (124) formed on the side of the first jaw (18) communicates with the needle (80) and disposes the suture (104). The slot (106) and groove (124) have a width to prevent the suture (104) from falling out. An opening (82) is formed in the second jaw (20) such that when the jaws are closed, the hollow needle with the suture will protrude from the opening (82). A plurality of solid or hollow needles can be longitudinally and/or laterally spaced on a jaw. A blade (156) can optionally be advanced along a cutting channel (134, 136) formed in the jaw to cut tissue between laterally spaced suture needles.</p> |
