A magnetic recording medium is used for a recording device which is capable of reliable high-density recording and reproducing of data. The magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer of an oxide that contains iron and barium, the atomic composition ratio of iron and barium being 2«Fe/Ba«8. The magnetic recording medium has a coercive force of 3 kOe or greater in a direction in which the magnetic head runs relative to the magnetic recording medium. This constitution makes it possible to obtain a high S/N and a low bit error rate, and, hence, to realize a mean time between failures longer than 150,000 hours at such a high recording density greater than 3 gibabits per a square inch.
|
