An electric toaster comprises a housing (2) with a toasting chamber (26) having an access opening at the top, and two heating units (70, 72) respectively bounding two opposite sides of the chamber and displaceable towards each other. The units are additionally mounted to be pivotable about horizontal axles (63, 64) and are influenced, such as by their own height or by suitable spring means, to pivot outwardly at the top, the units being repositionable preferably into a parallel setting by insertion into the toasting chamber of an item to be toasted. In the setting in which they are pivoted outwardly at the top, the units adopt a V-shaped arrangement for enhanced delivery of heat through the access opening to, for example, a bread roll or the like supported above the opening.
