A helmet (30) for use by riders of bicycles, motorcycles or other vehicles. Left and right hearing assemblies (70, 72) are mounted inside the helmet (30). Each of the hearing assemblies (70, 72) has an elongated ear cup (76) positioned to fit snugly over a respective one of the user's ears. Respective hearing conduits (92) extend from the ear cups (76) through the interior of the helmet (30) to respective openings (43). Thereby while the ear cups (76) block substantial wind noises, the hearing conduits (42) direct desirable sounds, such as emergency sirens, other traffic noises and voices, to the user's ears. User operable actuators for closing and opening the hearing conduits (92) as desired can be provided. Optional ventilation tubes (100) direct cooling and drying air through openings in the ear cups (76) to the user's ears. Gates or shutters supported by the helmet (30) shell may allow the user to open and close the ventilation tubes as desired.
