The invention relates to a process for stabilising strip in a plant for coating strip material in which a metal strip is taken through a container of the molten coating material having a through channel beneath the melt surface in which induction currents are induced by an electromagnetic travelling wave and, in interaction with said travelling wave, generate an electromagnetic force to retain the coating material. In the region of the through channel is applied a controllable magnetic field superimposed on the swing of the electromagnetic travelling wave, the field intensity and/or frequency of which can be adjusted depending on the position of the strip in the coating channel detected by sensors. The invention also relates to a device for implementing the process.
