Brighter, lower-cost optical display unit for e.g. traffic warnings

This optical display unit is controlled in terms of the position and intensity of light emitted (1). It is esp. a liq. crystal display (LCD) for transflective operation, i.e. visible using transmitted and/or reflected light. It has a plane, light control device (7), esp. a liq. crystal cell. This controls visible light transmission selectively, from the artificial light source (4) behind it. Between source and optical cell, there is an optical diffuser (5), This provides the information display, which is opt. illuminated from in front, as well (10). A feature of this unit is an optically dense layer (5) causing isotropic scattering. Its scattering centres vary in their dimensions up to a few tens of a wavelength, as emitted by the artificial light source (4).
