A method used for the physical treatment of materials, e.g. of water, mineral alkaline solutions, acids and bases, is novel in exposing the substance to a composite electromagnetic field, having constant and variable components. Also claimed is the corresponding device providing the treatment, with a vessel (10) to receive the material, and an inductance (20) to generate the field. Pref. the constant field is generated by an inductance supplied with DC. The variable field is generated by an inductance connected to a varying potential in the form of a trapezoidal wave, derived from a sine wave. The varying field rotates about an axis parallel to the flow of fluid. The vessel is plastic, pref PVC.
