Determining periodicity of enciphered number or text sequence in register

The register (1) is loaded with a sequence of eight elements (8) and has two comparators (2, 3) fitted to a slide (4). The first comparator is fixed to the slide and the second is moved relative to the first along a guide (5). The sledge (4) is shifted along a second guide (6) parallel to the guide (5) to the register. A comparator (7) compares the results in the two comparators (2, 3) and moves them accordingly. If there is agreement, it moves the slide along the guide (6); if there is no agreement, it moves only the comparator (3) along the guide (5). The results of the comparison are shown on the display (9).
