The expansion mat material for a vehicle exhaust catalyst system comprises high temp. fibres such as or ceramic, aluminium oxide or glass and the like. The bonding agent has a constant reassertion characteristic at the initial working temp. range starting at room temps. As the working temp. increases, the mat material expands to take up expansion through heat in the catalyst system. The bonding agent is of silicon, a high temp. elastomer, a polyurethane elastomer or an epoxy elastomer.
