A process used in an electrostatic separator unit comprises the creation of a variable high voltage region between emission and deposition electrodes and controlling the electric charge supplied to the electrodes, the majority of which is supplied as pulses separated by intervals longer than the pulse duration. In an improvement on this process the charge is supplied as a main electric pulse over a first duration and the interval between two main pulses is divided into second and third durations. Electricity supply is turned off during the second duration and then the charge is supplied as one or more return pulses during the third duration. The length of the second and third durations, as well as the number and size of the return pulses, are adapted to the separator unit operating conditions at the time. |
