A magnetic recording medium has a surface profile in which the number (PC25) of peaks projecting above a slice line 25 Ñ below the maximum peak height is 5 to 100/mm. The ratio PC50/PC25 is 1 to 3, PC50 being the number of peaks projecting above a further slice line 50 Ñ below the maximum peak height. The ratio of the high spot count at the centre line, i.e. the number of peaks per unit length projecting above centre line, to PC25 is 1 to 4. The skewness is 1 to 5, The maximum peak height R p is 60 to 200 Ñ as measured from the centre line, and the bearing ratio at a depth of 50 Ñ from the maximum peak height is not more than 3%. |
