The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for forming a longitudinally extending keyway portion in a mill roll (120) having a central bore. The keyway portion may be either a keyway or a tab portion (116). A cutting head (100) is provided, and includes a body (102) and one or more cutting tools (110) extending from the periphery of the cutting head body. The cutting head (100) is driven through the central bore of the mill roll (120), and the cutting tools form one or more keyway portions adjacent and communicating with the central bore.
