A tracheostomy or endotracheal tube obturator 2 is provided with an air passage and a whistle or reed at the proximal end 23. If the obturator is not removed it can impede the air flow, and exacerbate breathing difficulties. Therefore, the audible warning alerts medical staff that the obturator is inside the tracheal tube. The obturator is flexible to enable it to adopt the shape of the tracheal tube but rigid enough to support the tube as it is inserted into the patients throat. The distal end of the obturator extends beyond the end of the tracheal tube and has a tapered, cross cut tip to prevent damage to the inner surface of the trachea. |
