PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen storage alloy having extremely high hydrogen- absorbing and-releasing rates and displaying excellent initial activation by incorporating specific amounts of Zr, Ti, Mn, V, specific rare earth elements, and Hf into Ni and forming a specific three-phase structure. SOLUTION: This hydrogen storage alloy has a composition consisting of, by weight, 25-45% Zr, 1-12% Ti, 10-20% Mn, 2-12% V, 0.6-5% of rare earth elements composed essentially of La and Ce, 0.1-4% Hf, and the balance Ni (where Ni content is not lower than 25%). Moreover, this alloy is composed of an Ni-Zr-Mn alloy having a three-phase structure consisting of a network continuous phase essentially of Ni-Zr alloy, a principal phase, in network, of Zr-Ni-Mn alloy, and a dispersed phase of (rare earth element)-Ni alloy distributed along the network. |
