PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method of an optical fiber preform to obtain an almost uniform outer shape of both ends of the preform after sintering. SOLUTION: In this production method of an optical fiber preform, a deposited body of quartz glass soot is relatively moved to a heating means to obtain a half-sintered state of the glass. Then the body is moved in the opposite direction to obtain a transparent glass. By moving the preform in the opposite direction in the second stage to the direction in the first half- sintering state, deformation in the outer shape is cancelled. Thus, an excellent optical fiber preform having uniform shape of both ends is obtd. |
