PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a crystalline polyimide, having a high crystallinity, excellent in physical and chemical heat and solvent resistances, etc., having excellent melt moldability and useful as an adhesive, etc., by specifying the inherent viscosity of a polyamic acid which is a precursor. SOLUTION: This crystalline polyimide comprises >=30mol% structural unit of formula I or II [X is a group selected from O, S, SO2 and CO; Ar is a bivalent aromatic group which is any one of a monocyclic, a condensed polycyclic and a ring aggregate; Y is a group selected from X and a 1-10C aliphatic hydrocarbon, a bivalent halogenated hydrocarbon or a 3-15C bivalent alicyclic hydrocarbon) and the inherent viscosity [ηinh] of a polyamic acid which is a precursor thereof is 0.3-3dl/g (measured at 0.5g/dl concentration and 30 deg.C in N- methylpyrrolidone solvent). Furthermore, the objective polyimide is preferably obtained by carrying out the condensation reaction of a 1,4- phenylenebistrimellitate dianhydride of formula III with a diamine of formula IV, etc., and then cyclodehydrating and imidating the resultant polyamic acid.
