PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a powdery refractory material forming a coating film of the refractory material having superior durability in a basic atmosphere. SOLUTION: This powdery refractory material consists essentially of 50-98wt.% magnesium oxide powder and 2-50wt.% titanium oxide powder or 50-90wt.% magnesium oxide powder and 4-50wt.% magnesium orthotitanate powder or further contains 2wt.% iron oxide.
