The display includes a box (2) which is mounted on a transparent or translucent flat surface (1). Each individual piece position is light illuminated (5). The returned light signal from the piece position is measured by a light detector. The light detector is preferably a contact detector. When the gaming piece (3) is in a particular position, the change in light return is detected (9) and used to control a switching mechanism (7) to provide the piece position electronically.
