The piece of wood (14) is originally linear and is made malleable by mechanical, chemical or thermal means. The wood is located on a support plate (12), on to which are mounted two modules (12a,12b), which represent the desired shape. At the central part (16) of the required S-shape, the piece of wood is located and held in position by means of a retaining cage (18). Locating and shaping brackets (39) are then attached to the shaping modules, at intervals around the required shape and the piece of wood is located in, and maintained in the required shape by these brackets. The wood is pressed into shape against the forming modules by means of a dynamic forming arm (68).
