An option detecting method for a printer is provided to reduce a processing routine for selection of an option by automatically detecting whether or not an option interface exists in software and manipulating a panel by a user and to prevent error due to the user's option processing. This method includes the steps of performing an error processing routine if an error occurs after initializing the printer, and setting an option detecting signal if the error does not occur; performing an on-line processing routine in case of on-line after setting the option detecting signal, and otherwise, detecting a function mode; performing a normal off-line processing routine if it is not the function mode, and detecting if it is an interface mode in case of the function mode; performing the next function mode processing routine if it is not the interface mode, and determining an option detecting signal in case of the interface mode; and displaying the established interface mode on an LCD in case of the option detection and if there is a change in the interface mode, displaying and setting a changed mode.
