METHODS FOR INDUCING SELECTED CELL TYPES

The present invention provides methods of using instructive or permissive induction to induce selected cell types in an animal. Usually, the methods involve direct implantation of mesenchyme into suitably prepared sites of adult animals. As a result, new functional organs are created in situ by mesenchymal induction of adult epithelial cells. Thus, the methods of the invention can be used in place of organ transplants in patients with chronic or irreversible organ failure. The invention also provides models for studying cancer and methods of reducing tumorigenicity. Cells, tissue recombinants and kits are provided.
