Ink=jet printing substrate giving strong, brilliant, sharp print

In recording material for ink jet printing, which has an ink-receiving coating on one or both sides of a polymer base, the base comprises a synthetic thermoplastic polymer (I) contg. >= 20 wt.% finely-divided inorganic filler and has a water absorption, before coating of >= 30 g/m<2>, determined by the Cobb value (ISO 535-1976 (E)) after 12 hours. Pref. (I) consists of polyolefin, polyester, polystyrene, polyamide or PVC, esp. linear polyethylene or isotactic polypropylene. The filler is CaCO3, kaolin, Al2O3, Al(OH)3, BaSO4, ppte.. The base contains 30-80 wt.% filler(s). The coating consists of film-forming PVA, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl acetate, poly(meth)acrylic acid, polyethylene-imine, copolymers of these homopolymers, starch, starch derivs and/or dextrin. It may also contain finely-divided inorg. pigments/fillers selected from those used in the base and/or polymeric quat. N cpd(s). The coating wt. is 0.2-20 g/m<2>.
