The invention relates to a process for treating waste (rubbish, garbage, refuse), in particular for reducing the volume thereof and rendering it inert. This process makes it possible for household and industrial waste which occurs to be reprocessed before it is initially dumped and, preferably, for waste from existing dumps to be reprocessed. The process is distinguished in that waste, optionally after sorting, is rendered biologically inert and compressed, the compressed, compacted waste being packed, before it is dumped, in portions in a manner such that gas and liquid exchange with the environment as well as the supply of light are at least largely prevented.
