[Also in Division H2] In an A.C. system for supplying loads M which intermittently require high reactive current, e.g. squirrel cage pole-changing motors, the line voltage is kept substantially constant at such times by energy from a capacitor CO which is connected via an inverter W, the firing angle of which is controlled in response to measurements of the line voltage and/or the current from a diesel D driven supply generator G. The inverter may be controlled to maintain a slightly leading power factor to compensate for ohmic voltage drop. The capacitor may be shunted by a battery UB to meet the active part of shock loads and it can also supply all the load for a short time during failure of the main supply. Inverter harmonics are suppressed at the bus-bars by reactors LW and filters F or alternatively load and generator reactors LM, LG are provided. The reactors may be shunted by capacitors. |
