A hollow column for mounting electrical components joined to apparatus on the outside has a foot, body elements joined together and a lid. One wall(43) of the body elements has an internal rib (72) to stiffen it. The ribs have a wave-shaped ridge line. The back wall of the elements has fasteners for a mounting plate on the inside. The connectors at the top and bottom are sleeves (44) with internal threads and bolts (50). The sleeves are stiffer than the surrounding material of the column. The sleeve axis is at a distance from the column wall that is about the radius of the appropriate box spanner for the bolt.
