To produce a compound web material, of a fibre web bonded to a thermoplastic film, the fibre web is initially heated to a bonding temp, and fed to a roller rotating at the same speed as the fibre web movement, and which is at least as wide as the web. The plastics film is applied by a wide-slit jet, at the roller, which delivers molten plastics at a tangent to the fibre web on the roller. The molten plastics on the fibre web is given an electrostatic charge by at least one electron sputtering electrode directed across the direction of travel. The compound web material is then cooled at and/or after it leaves the roller.
