Sewing machine thread cutter with sharp edge fixed blade

The thread cutting mechanism, in a sewing machine, has a fixed blade (24) and a moving blade (36) which work together to sever the thread. The moving blade (36) is shifted to move the thread to be cut so that it lies under the fixed blade (24). A thread protector (30) is operated to support the thread, to prevent the thread from shearing before the cutting action of the blades (24,36). The thread protector (30) is separate from the fixed blade (24).
