A process for the production of primary and secondary alcohols comprises reacting molecular oxygen with a mixture of a saturated hydrocarbon and a boric reactant which is a boric acid or boric anhydride, in the liquid phase, and hydrolysing the liquid phase obtained in order to separate the alcohol formed characterized in that the hydrocarbon, boric reactant and O2 are introduced continuously into the liquid phase which contains a boric derivative of the alcohol corresponding to the hydrocarbon in a concentration amounting to between 1.5 and 40% by weight expressed in terms of combined alcohol in the boric derivative and in that the reaction mixture is drawn off continuously prior to hydrolysis. Specified temperatures and pressures are from 100 DEG to 250 DEG C. and from 1 to 40 kg./cm.2. Suitable hydrocarbons are cyclohexane, cyclo-octane, cyclododecane, hexane, octane and hexadecane. Examples describe the production of cyclohexanol.
