In a gas scrubber gas and liquid are passed countercurrently through a rectangular column 10 between curved baffles 11 arranged as shown and extending the full width of the column. Liquid is recirculated from a sump 20 and delivered at 16 to pass into the scrubber through slots in the adjacent baffle. The baffle opposite the gas inlet 22 dips below the level of liquid in the sump 20 and the liquid level is adjustable. Leading edges of the baffles 11 above the sump 20 may have adjustable flaps secured thereto.
