PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain in high yield a trimethylolalkane useful as a raw material for alkyd resins, polyesters, polyurethanes, etc., and as a base for hair cosmetics and skin cosmetics, emulsifier, lubricant, etc. SOLUTION: This trimethylolalkane of the formula R<2> -C-(CH2 OH)3 is obtained by reaction between an aldehyde of the formula R<1> CH2 CHO (R<1> is a 5-10C straight-chain aliphatic group) and formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline substance (e.g. NaOH) in methyl t-butyl ether solvent at 30-45 deg.C. The amounts of formaldehyde, the solvent and alkaline substance to be used are 3-8 (pref. 5.5-6.5) molar times, 3-10wt. times, and 2-3 molar times, based on the aliphatic al-dehyde, respectively. Use of the methyl t-butyl ether liquid at normal, temperatures as the solvent obviates the necessity of operations to dissolve the feedstocks in advance and to maintain the dissolved state. |
