PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treating technique applicable independently of the surface properties of metallic stock and foil and a honeycomb joining method and improving the adhesion of a slurry for carrying a catalyst to a metallic carrier. SOLUTION: When a metallic carrier used for a device for purifying exhaust gas from an internal-combustion engine is produced, a carrier having a honeycomb structure is formed, immersed in an aq. SiO2 -CrO3 soln., dried and then coated with a slurry for carrying a catalyst. A more significant effect is produced by incorporating HF and/or HNO3 into the SiO2 -CrO3 soln. The pref. ratio of SiO2 to CrO3 is 0.1-10 and the pref. amts. of HF and HNO3 are 1-15g/L and 3-20g/L, respectively. The carrier is preferably immersed in the soln. at 60-100 deg.C for >=3sec. A more significant effect is produced by applying ultrasonic vibration during the immersion. |
