PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the receiving rate of false notes by detecting a tape adhered to a paper money, e.g. by means of a thickness detection sensor and comparing a discriminated pattern and a standard pattern so as to improve the receiving rate of true notes. SOLUTION: A group of paper discerning device sensors 112 detects the intensity of the reflected light beam, the transmitting light beam, etc., of a paper money 11, a magnetic characteristic caused by ink, the adhered tape, etc., and a paper money discerning device control part 108 collects each detection value to discriminate the money kind, authentication, etc., by an old discriminating method. When the discriminating result is not satisfactory, the paper money 11 is judged to be false. When the discriminating result is satisfactory, the tape is detected by the thickness detection sensor of the sensor group 112 and when the tape is detected, the reflected light beam and the standard pattern are compared. When the signal level of the electric signal forms a prescribed reflection light pattern at this time, the reflected light pattern is within the range of the standard pattern so that the paper money 11 is discriminated to be false. In this case, as the tape is detected, the paper money 11 is judged to be already mended. |
