PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To calculate the weight of vehicle without requiring any special sensor. SOLUTION: Driving force F of a vehicle is calculated (S1) followed by calculation of acceleration (a) (S2). An acceleration resistance Ra=a×WBASE, i.e., the product of acceleration (a) and the basic weight of vehicle WBASE, and the sum of air resistance Rr1 and rolling resistance determined by the vehicle speed VSP are then subtracted from the driving force F thus determining a running resistance Rs=F-Ra-Rr1 corresponding to the grade resistance (S3-S5). Subsequently, time variation of accelerationΔa=a-a' is calculated (S6) followed by calculation of time variation of running resistance corresponding to grade resistanceΔRS=Rs-Rs' (S7). The basic weight of vehicle WBASE is then added with an amount of time variation of running resistanceΔRs/time variation of accelerationΔa to calculate a vehicle weight WREAL=WBASE+(ΔRs/Δa)×K (S9) which is finally averaged (S10).
