Making a composite element (1) with a reinforced section (6) consists of locating the section (7) inside a mould cavity (15) which is then filled with molten light metal via opening (22). The opening is then closed and a pressure applied to force the metal to penetrate the porous section (7). An air evacuation unit (21) is connected directly to the section (7) to enable air inside the section to be easily removed.
