The latent heat storage system includes a vessel (10) which encloses a volume (12) filled with a latent heat storage medium (14). A circulated heat transfer fluid, which is both immiscible with and has a considerably lower density than the latent heat storage medium is introduced to the base of the storage medium through a distributor (26) and flows through and indirect contact with the medium in the form of droplets. The distributor has an outer jacket (90) which is in contact with but not wetted by the heat storage medium and which is made from a material with a high insulation value.
